Baja California

Baja California was a once in a lifetime experience for a college student on the east coast, like myself. I flew out and met the car, which was driven out by a few members, at the competition site. The site was fantastic for off-road junkies because it was complete with obstacles such as ditches, bumps, and rocks. The Georgia Tech team was attending its second competition in the past 5 years, so our goal was to show improvement from last year's competition in Tennessee. Baja California had teams from all over the country with universities such as Michigan, Cornell, and UCLA as well as from countries around the world including China, India, and Mexico.
We had a few issues, such as problems with rules interpretation as well as general lack of urgency with our young team. After the first day, the leadership stepped up and the car was through Tech inspection and into the dynamic events. Our major problems for the dynamic events revolved around tuning our transmission correctly as well as problems with our fuel line. Each issue was handled with enough time to place better in every event than our place in each event last year.
Overall, it was a great weekend from the folks at SAE, Honda, SolidWorks, Polaris, Volvo Group and other sponsors. After the competition we even had time to see Malibu Beach and Hollywood on the way back to the airport.
